Fine sandy beach in the west, extensive mudflats in the east, that is Hörnum Odde. From rare dune valleys and sandy salt marshes, deeply cut, semi-open dune valleys and rare sandy salt marshes the Odde offers a refuge for flora and fauna. Only a few plants can exist on the barren sandy soil of the dunes. These include especially the beach grass and the sand rye, the dwarf rush, sundew, natterjack toad and many other extraordinary species. The Sylt dune nature, also called coastal desert, is not comparable with any German landscape. But the primeval landscape changes continuously - especially in storm-tide years.
